Which visa to obtain

An international driver (truck driver) needs to obtain a short-term multiple-entry business visa.

Short-term because trips usually last no more than 4-5 days at a time. Multiple-entry because drivers will need to enter the United Kingdom repeatedly. To obtain it, the driver must confirm their employment. For this you can provide:

• a copy of the employment contract;
• a letter from the employer indicating the position and average monthly salary;
• a copy of the work visa or work permit of the country where you are officially employed.

It is very important to prove the purpose of the trip, i.e., the reason why the driver needs to enter the country.

How to prove

Option 1. You or your employer have a partner in the UK.

In this case you should provide a copy of the cooperation agreement, and if the company has previously delivered cargo to the United Kingdom, you can attach copies of the transport waybills from previous trips. A company in the UK can issue an invitation specifying the driver’s details and confirming that he will be arriving to them, and also indicate the date of the first planned entry.

Option 2. You or your employer do not have a permanent partner in the UK.

Often the carrier company asks the driver to obtain a UK visa in order to be able to send him on an order that it receives a day, or sometimes just a few hours, before the driver’s departure. Therefore it is practically impossible to plan such a trip in advance and even more so to issue an invitation. Such orders are usually received through an online system and as soon as an order appears, the carrier fulfills it. In this case you should provide several of the most recent waybills for the company’s last trips to the United Kingdom. You must also attach a letter from the employer on company letterhead indicating:

• the working scheme;
• the approximate number of trips to the UK per month;
• the number of days the driver stays in the UK per trip.

Such a letter can also be attached in the first option and it will be a great advantage for your case. Since this is a business trip, the employer should state that they are sending you on a trip and take responsibility for your compliance with the UK’s visa rules.

Documents

In addition to the documents mentioned, it is advisable to attach proof of salary payment. For example, this can be a bank statement for the card where the employer transfers your salary. It is also desirable that your card balance shows an amount that allows you to cover your food expenses during the trip.

In addition to these documents you should attach the standard set of documents for a tourist visa:

• a passport and its pages with stamps;
• previous or second valid passport;
• a residence permit or work permit card;
• documents related to family and property.

Visa application procedure

To obtain a visa the applicant must submit the required package of documents to the Visa Application Center:

1. Fill out the online application.
2. Translate the attached documents into English.
3. Pay the consular fee online.
4. Schedule an appointment to provide fingerprints at the visa center.
5. Upload all documents online or bring them to the visa center for scanning for an additional fee.

Processing time

The normal processing time for documents is about 15 working days. If you need to speed up the visa process, you can pay an additional fee of about 250 euros and the documents will be processed within 5 working days. The cost of the consular fee depends on the duration of the visa required. For example, a six-month visa is 108 euros, a two-year visa is 419 euros. All payments are made online. You can pay with your card or provide the link and login details to your employer.
