Obtaining nonprofit status
Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) are legal entities that operate not to obtain profit but to achieve certain social outcomes. NPO activities may be related, for example, to charity, patronage, representation and protection of the interests of certain population groups, etc.
The obtaining of nonprofit status is carried out at the territorial office of the State Tax Service of the lower level. For this, it is necessary to submit to the corresponding tax authority (depending on the place of registration of the legal entity) an application (form 1-RN) and copies of the constituent documents.
The tax inspectorate reviews the submitted documents, assigns the organization a specific nonprofit indicator and, if a positive decision is made, enters the NPO’s data into the Register of Nonprofit Institutions and Organizations.
The nonprofit indicator is a number that is assigned to the organization and classifies it into a certain category of NPOs depending on its field of activity. For example, political parties are assigned the nonprofit indicator (0008), trade unions and their associations – (0016).
In addition, it is important to remember that if changes occur in the data contained in the Register, the NPO is obliged to inform the tax inspectorate within 10 days from the moment such changes occur, so that the Register can be updated accordingly.
