The profession “Truck Driver” — the job of a freight vehicle driver in Canada — is among the most in-demand occupations. This is primarily due to the country’s vast size, and products, goods and other items need to be delivered both within Canada and beyond its borders. Moreover, working as a trucker is very demanding, involving various obligations and long periods away from home. This latter factor affects Canadians’ reluctance to take on this job. Most likely for this reason Canadian companies are interested in attracting foreign specialists.

The relocation of truck drivers to Canada, step by step, is no different from that of other specialists; most often it happens as follows:

• you find an employer;
• you obtain an LMIA work permit;
• you apply for a work visa;
• you proceed with the immigration process and obtaining permanent residence.

What issues you may encounter when obtaining a truck driver visa

1. To work as a trucker you need to obtain a Class 1 driver’s licence in Canada.

In this case there are two options:

• apply for a regular visitor visa and go to study at a driving school. For this you will need to invest significant effort to obtain the visa and spend a certain amount on tuition, food and accommodation. Moreover, if you don’t yet have a visa, we do not recommend applying for it to attend a driving school. Recently there have been frequent refusals by visa officers when obtaining it. This is most likely because the main criterion for the visa officer’s decision is to be convinced that after the trip to Canada you will return home. This will be very difficult to prove with an invitation to study. After all, the officer understands that after obtaining the licence, you will continue to look for a job in Canada. While you do not have an employer, you will have to pay all expenses yourself.
• find an employer before coming to Canada. In this case you will be able to discuss remotely with them the financing of part of your expenses. In practice we often encounter employers willing to pay for the flight, partially cover accommodation, and possibly provide some relocation funds. Therefore, regarding training costs, you will most likely have to rely on your own budget. Driving school tuition costs 10-15 thousand Canadian dollars. It all depends on the school’s category and modules.

2. Before looking for an employer, you need to confirm your work experience.

If you are an experienced driver but are outside Canada, you should familiarize yourself with the job requirements. As a rule, these are requirements for appropriate education, level of qualification, language knowledge and documented work experience in the specialty, depending on the province.

Thus, under the Atlantic Immigration Program you only need to have 1 year of work experience, while the province of Manitoba selects specialists with 3 or more years of work experience.

If you lack work experience, you should use the first option and after finishing driving school look for an employer. In this case your advantage will be Canadian driver’s licence.

To confirm work experience you must provide:

• resume;
• copies of previous employment contracts;
• proof of wage payments;
• a reference letter from the employer stating the period of employment and the duties performed.

Where to look for an employer

The most popular sources of information are websites (official Job Bank and CanadaIndeed) and advertisements (newspapers, magazines, driving school recommendations). Another source is to choose a specific city in Canada where you want to work, carefully study all the offers from transport companies and send out your resume.

Language and education requirements

For immigration to Canada, a mandatory requirement is proficiency in English and relevant education.

The required level of English is confirmed according to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Requirements may vary by province. Usually the required overall IELTS score is 4.

To verify education, the candidate must contact a Canadian organization that will conduct an equivalency assessment of your education compared to Canadian standards. This procedure is mandatory and takes time. We recommend doing it in advance.
