Which visa to apply for (truck drivers)

Citizens of the European Union may freely come to Switzerland to work for up to three months, and the period can be extended if necessary.

To obtain employment, citizens of countries that are not members of the European Union or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) must have a work visa and a guaranteed employment contract.

For international drivers from Ukraine, Moldova, Russia who perform cargo transportation tasks to Switzerland, it is necessary to obtain a work visa or a residence permit with a work authorization:

  • a national visa type D (for employment of 3-6 months).
  • a residence permit with the right to work (for contracts of months or longer).

Work authorization is issued by the cantons after official approval. For this, the employer in Switzerland must submit an application to the cantonal migration authority for the issuance of a work and residence permit.

A visa is issued if the international driver has an invitation from a specific Swiss employer, can confirm their employment and provides the required list of documents. To confirm this, you can attach a letter from the Swiss employer indicating the purpose of the trip, cargo delivery, payment, or a contract with the Swiss employer.

It is important to prepare as much evidence as possible confirming that the international driver is entering the country not for tourism, but to carry out cargo transportation.
