A frequently asked question by our clients: “Is it possible to immigrate to Canada through studying at Canadian educational institutions?”. This is indeed an achievable plan.
By studying at an educational institution, a student obtains the status of a resident of Canada, i.e. a residence permit. This gives them the right to use all social protections and rights (except participation in elections). To apply for a Canadian passport, the student must meet certain requirements:
- Complete two academic years at a Canadian college or university.
- Live in Canada for 3 years out of 6 years.
Only after that can they apply for immigration to Immigration Canada under the Express Entry program, in the Experience Class category.
Main requirements for applicants to educational institutions
To begin the process of obtaining a student visa, you must:
- Have an invitation to study and an official letter of acceptance for studies or be a participant in an educational program.
- Fill out the application form to apply to the Canada Visa Application Center. In the form you will need to provide all information about the educational institution and the course you will be taking.
- Prepare the necessary package of documents. Each university or college sets its admission requirements and document package. The requirements themselves depend on the province where the institution is located.
- A very important document is the future student’s motivation letter. This is an opportunity to argue the advantages of Canadian universities and why you need it. And don’t forget to clearly state the reasons for returning home.
- Possession of a language test TOEFL or IELTS as proof of English level, or DALF for French.
- Payment of consular fees.
- Interview with a visa officer.
Financial component of the process
Pay special attention to the financial aspect of your trip. The amount required for studies usually includes tuition fees, accommodation and personal expenses that the student will have during studies (for example, purchasing textbooks). You can confirm financial ability by providing bank statements and records from the applicant as well as their parents or a sponsor who will pay all costs for the applicant’s upcoming studies. If you plan to study for several years, it is sufficient to present proof of funds for the first year of study. Be prepared to explain who the sponsor is to you and why they will pay for your trip if they are not your relative.

Student visa
Immigration legislation is a very complex process and you need to understand who needs to apply for a student visa and who does not. So, if you plan to study in Canada for 6 months or more, in this case you need to submit documents to apply for a student visa. If you plan to study for less than 6 months (language courses or professional training), then you will be issued a visitor visa. This means you will have to prepare different document packages, as each type of visa corresponds to certain legal norms.
