The US visa for Ukrainians is one of the hardest to obtain. Unexpected barriers appear at every stage — from collecting documents and filling out forms to the final interview at the consulate. Each year in Ukraine there are over 5,000 refusals to enter this country. This is confirmed by the U.S. Department of State report for 2019, which shows that nearly half of Ukrainian applicants were denied approval — 45% of Ukrainians were not issued a visa in one reporting year. These figures are much higher than in many other countries. The company “Nakaz” can help you succeed in obtaining a visa to visit America. We are ready to reveal all the secrets of visa processing and help you avoid all the pitfalls.
Visa processing – visa support services
The American visa is not considered easy to obtain for nothing. The main stages of the application process consist of:
- determining the purpose of the visit;
- collecting documents and completing the online application;
- paying the consular fee;
- scheduling an interview at the consulate;
- personal interview with a consular officer.
At first glance, nothing complicated. But in reality, at every step you will face long lists of requirements and notes that must be followed precisely.
Nakaz is ready to offer its clients quality visa support services — from a simple consultation to full accompaniment at every stage. Possible options for obtaining a US visa
There are many different types of visas in the United States. Depending on the purpose of the trip, they are divided into two categories, which in turn include subcategories. Thus, there are immigrant visas — for permanent residence in the United States — and nonimmigrant visas — intended for temporary stays.
When choosing a visa type for a particular situation, sometimes several options may be suitable. In that case, you need to study the specifics of your case and decide which type of permit gives you a better chance of obtaining a visa. Our specialists will definitely help you with this.
First, let’s consider nonimmigrant visas. They are requested much more often and have specific types, each denoted by a Latin letter from A to R combined with a number. They can be issued for specific dates of your travel, but most often they are valid for 10 years with the possibility of multiple entries. However, since 2014 a 10-year US visa has been available, but it is obtained much less frequently. The total length of stay in the country and the visa validity depend on the decision of the consular officer.
The combined B-1/B-2 visa is the most common. It includes:
- business visa to the USA for Ukrainian citizens (B-1) — intended for meetings with business partners, participation in scientific or professional events and conferences;
- tourist visa to the USA (B-2) — intended for stays in the country for vacation, visiting relatives and friends, and medical treatment.
Work visas to the USA have different categories depending on the future profession and specifics of the vacancy:
- highly skilled specialists (H-1B);
- seasonal agricultural workers (H-2A);
- skilled and unskilled workers (H-2B) — temporary or seasonal work in various industries;
- trainees (H-3);
- family members of holders of H visas (H-4) — intended for spouses or children who wish to accompany a relative during training;
- for employees of an international company temporarily transferred to a branch, subsidiary or affiliate in the United States (L-1);
- family members of L-1 visa holders (L-2) — intended for spouses or children who wish to accompany a relative during the assignment;
- individuals with extraordinary ability in the arts, sports, education, science and business, and their accompanying persons (O);
- athletes, performers and other cultural figures (P);
- persons entering for training and work under an international cultural exchange program (Q);
- religious workers (R);
- journalists and foreign media employees (I);
- students, teachers and researchers coming to the US under exchange programs (J).
Student visas to the United States have two types:
- category F-1 — allows academic study at a high school, college or university;
- category M-1 — a student visa for non-academic professional education in the USA.
If you are traveling with a layover in the United States, a transit visa (C) will be useful. It will give you the right to change flights, but if you plan to sightsee in the country before visiting another one, you should apply for category B-2. For seafarers and other crew members, as well as air transport workers, a D visa is required for legal presence in the US. Usually they receive a combined C-1/D visa (transit passengers/crew members). If airline or ship crew members plan to visit cultural attractions during their free time, then together with the transit visa a tourist visa will also be required.

There are also separate types of visas for religious workers (R), journalists (I) and participants of various exchange programs (J).
Regarding immigrant visas, the situation is simpler at least in terms of the range of options. One of them is the fiancé(e) visa (K-1), which is issued to allow marriage. For family reunification in the USA there is the spouse visa. Both of these imply subsequent processing for permanent residence or obtaining US citizenship.
How long the US visa process takes
Obtaining a US visa takes quite a long time. It takes about a week to collect all the documents. Consular officers may review them for 10 to 90 days, depending on the visa type and individual aspects of your case. Of course, there is always the possibility of expedited processing, but there must be compelling reasons for this.
Questions and Answers
- Can Ukrainian citizens get a US visa without an interview?
A personal interview is mandatory for all who wish to visit this country. But if you have or previously had a US visa and it expired no more than 12 months ago, you will most likely qualify for a simplified procedure — without an interview. Persons under 14 years old and those 80 or older also do not need to attend an interview.

- How much does a US visa cost for Ukrainians and how should it be paid?
You only need to pay the consular fee applicable to the specific visa category. For example, the fee for a tourist or transit visa is 160 USD and is paid in hryvnia at the exchange rate on the day of the transaction. This can be done at any bank branch. Some visa types require payment of additional fees.
- What are the main reasons for a US visa refusal for Ukrainians?
The main reason for refusal is suspicion of intent to immigrate to America. Negative decisions are also often made due to errors in the documents because the applicant cannot properly prepare all papers to provide strong evidence of ties to their homeland. For example, forgetting to attach information about real estate in Ukraine. Another reason for refusal is a poor performance at the personal interview.
- Is a US visa possible after a refusal, and what are the chances?
Yes, it is possible. The chances depend on your current circumstances — for example, whether the reasons for the previous refusal have changed, whether there are changes in your visa history, and other factors that can only be determined after a detailed review of your case.
- Is health insurance required for a US visa for Ukrainians, and if so, what kind?
No. Each applicant independently decides whether they need medical insurance for the duration of their trip.
- How long does it take to get a US visa and is expedited processing available?
Visa processing takes from 10 to 90 days, depending on your visa type. Expedited issuance requires serious grounds. For example, the death of close relatives, urgent medical treatment in the United States, attending urgent business events (if a US company would suffer significant loss due to your absence), and so on. It is important that each circumstance meets the embassy’s criteria and is documented.
- What are the photo requirements for a US visa for Ukrainians?
The US consulate has many requirements for photos. They must be color with a white or light gray background and without rounded corners. Photo size — 5×5 cm; face size from crown to chin — 2.5-3.5 cm; eyes should be 2.8-3.5 cm from the bottom edge of the photo. The face should be centered in the frame. Retouching to alter appearance is not allowed; large hairstyles or headwear are prohibited unless required for medical reasons or religious practices. All photos must have been taken within the last 6 months and reflect your current appearance. Glasses, headscarves and other head coverings are not allowed in the photo except when required by a doctor’s note or religion.
