The Diversity Visa Lottery, also known as the Green Card Lottery 2022, is a visa drawing program that grants the right to obtain permanent resident status (Green Card holder) in the USA. The drawing is held officially every year and gives any applicant the opportunity to move to the United States of America for permanent residence and bring close relatives with them.

Every year 1.5 million Ukrainians apply to participate, and nearly 5% of Ukrainians fulfill their dream of moving to the United States of America.
Requirements for Green Card lottery participants
You can submit an application to participate from 12:00 on October 7, 2021, until 12:00 on November 10, New York time.
The U.S. State Department selects the lucky ones using a randomized computer drawing. All winners are then distributed among six geographic regions of the U.S.
Applicants selected in the program must meet simple but strict selection requirements:
1. The applicant must have been born in one of the countries listed as eligible.
2. To meet the DV lottery Program’s education or work experience requirements, it is necessary to:
3. Obtain clear legal information about the requirements of the Immigration Act and only then submit an application to participate in the lottery.
Participation in the DV Program
To fill out the application you need to provide personal information about yourself, your spouse with whom you are legally married, and children under 21 years old (unmarried), even if they do not plan to move to the U.S. with you. In addition to this information about you and your spouse, many other details will be required for the form.
The application is submitted on the official website dvlottery.state.gov. You are given a limited time to complete it – 30 minutes.
- Family name and given name as in your passport.
- Gender.
- Date of birth – day, month, year.
- City/town of birth.
- Country of birth for the DV program.
- Photograph (the photo must be recent, not older than six months, and must meet the U.S. State Department’s requirements).
- Your postal address (detailed, indicating street, locality, country and postal code).
- Country of residence at the time of completion. Even if you are currently in the U.S., if you meet the lottery participation rules, you can submit the application.
- Your contact phone number.
- A valid email address. It is important to have access to the email because the Consular Center will send you a message with information about the date of your embassy interview.
- Level of education.
- Marital status at the time of application.
- Information about children:
- indicate the name, date of birth, gender, city/village and country of birth of all unmarried children under 21 (regardless of whether they live with you and whether they intend to immigrate to the U.S. with you).
- a separate photograph must be provided for each child, according to all technical specifications.
- you must list: all biological children, legally adopted children, stepsons and stepdaughters who are unmarried and who have not yet reached 21 years of age at the time of application. Even if you are married to the child’s parent or if the spouse or child lives separately from you and does not plan to immigrate to the U.S. with you.
You should carefully check all information. It must be entered into the form correctly. At a certain stage of the process you will need to confirm your application and save the code that the system assigns to the application.
We recommend saving the confirmation number in a place you will have access to in May of the following year.
If the application is filled out incorrectly, it may be disqualified during selection. Problems may arise at the stage of the embassy interview due to incorrect or false data in the application.
If you decide to seek help from a lawyer, be sure to clarify exactly which data they will fill in. Check your email and application code so that you can access the status check of the application yourself.
To avoid having your application canceled, we recommend not submitting it in the first week applications are accepted. In practice, server failures are observed precisely during this period. It is possible that after submitting you may not see a confirmation of the completed form and begin filling out another one, which can automatically disqualify both applications if the first one was actually accepted by the system. Try to fill it out a week after the start, but at least 7 days before the end of the application period. Pay attention to New York daytime hours. Usually there are fewer applicants at that time. This will in no way affect your chances of winning.
The U.S. State Department has changed the conditions for participation in the lottery. The essence of the amendment is that each participant must have a valid passport, the details of which must be entered in their application. You must indicate not only the passport series and number but also its expiration date. The main purpose of the amendment is due to the huge number of duplicate, fraudulent applications submitted every year by various agencies that demand money from applicants who have won.
Reasons for denial of a Green Card
Can a visa be denied if the applicant won the Green Card? Unfortunately, yes, because the decision is made at the interview.
In general, among the main reasons for denial in the lottery, five criteria should be noted:
- Medical criterion — 7 diseases that can lead to visa refusal (tuberculosis, leprosy and five venereal diseases (excluding HIV);
- Psychiatric problems if the person is considered potentially dangerous to society;
- Criminal criterion (the person is involved in drug trafficking and prostitution);
- Security criteria. With the implementation of the new public charge rule in 2018–2020, an applicant may be considered potentially dangerous for political or terrorist reasons in the opinion of the visa officer.
- Suspicion of noncompliance with the Lottery instructions (missing family information, poor-quality photograph, incorrect English spelling).
At the interview with the visa officer you will be required to confirm information about your education, marital status, family members, activities in your home country, plans for activities in the U.S., whether you have start-up funds for the first months of living in the United States, and whether you have a sponsor/friend/relative in the U.S. who will help you adapt. In this case, as always, everything will depend on the completed form and the interview itself. If you have even the slightest doubts, consult experts who will help you do everything correctly.
After successfully passing the interview with the visa officer, you will receive a visa and have 6 months to prepare for departure to the U.S. You can use this time to finish affairs in your country and start looking for an apartment, job, daycare centers, and schools in the U.S. The permanent resident status granted to every Green Card holder provides the ability to enjoy rights that are almost indistinguishable from those of a citizen of the country.
A Green Card holder can apply for citizenship after 5 years of continuous residence in the country. During this period the applicant must demonstrate themselves to be a law-abiding and decent resident, regularly paying taxes and contributing to the country.
