Obtaining an immigration visa depends on whether the candidate meets the criteria of the United Kingdom’s immigration system. Difficulties arise when preparing the documents. To get a visa on the first try, it is important to correctly prepare the required set of documents.
Wife visa
Immigration to the United Kingdom on a wife visa is possible if your spouse meets one of the criteria and has:
- British citizenship,
- settled status in the United Kingdom,
- refugee status or humanitarian protection status granted by the United Kingdom.

What needs to be proven to obtain a wife visa?
- Confirm the address of residence with your husband in the UK (rented flat, owned property or other). As proof that the person lives at the specified address, provide utility payment receipts, rental invoices, or evidence of living with close relatives.
- Complete the application form.
- Pass the TB TEST. This is a certificate from a doctor accredited by the International Organization for Migration for a fluorographic examination for tuberculosis.
- Take the IELTS TEST and demonstrate English language ability at minimum level A1 or higher. If you have an existing academic qualification such as a Bachelor, Masters or PhD, attach it.
- Provide relationship evidence (RELATIONSHIP EVIDENCE), i.e. supply proof of a genuine relationship between the spouses and attach the main document – the marriage certificate.
- Spouse’s finances – MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENT. In the context of the application, the spouse acts as the sponsor. To confirm financial standing, the sponsor must provide information about all income received during the relevant calculation period. The minimum annual income to apply for the visa without dependent family members is £18,600. It is necessary to confirm not only the availability of funds in a bank account; there are criteria for the documentation package for such an application. The set of documents depends on the type of activity the spouse undertakes in the United Kingdom: employed or self-employed.

The receiving party – the spouse in the UK must prepare a file of documents:

- a written invitation from the sponsoring spouse.
Under the requirements of UK immigration law, to begin the process of obtaining citizenship you must go through naturalization. Citizenship is obtained only in the UK, after 5 years’ residence in the country on a spouse visa. The initial spouse visa is issued for 2.5 years after marriage and, if all immigration requirements are met, after 2.5 years you can apply for the second spouse visa.
Husband visa
The procedure for obtaining a husband’s visa is no different from the procedure for obtaining a wife’s visa. By definition, a spouse is a person who has entered into a legal marriage with a British citizen or a settled person, has a confirming document, is recognized by the state and intends to join the spouse for cohabitation. The British husband visa falls into a category that allows for subsequent application for citizenship.
Partner visa
Partner visas are suitable for living in the UK with your partner – a British citizen or a person with settled status in the UK.
Conditionally, the partner category can be divided into several groups:
Spouse, including same-sex partners.
Unmarried partners and:
- have been in a relationship for at least 2 years and lived in the United Kingdom before applying, including same-sex relationships;
- have been in a relationship for 4 years and lived outside the UK.
Fiancé/fiancée or prospective civil partners, including same-sex partners.
To obtain a partner visa, candidates must meet certain requirements:
- partners’ age – 18+,
- genuineness of the relationship – interactions, communication, meetings, everything that can really convince the officer of the authenticity of the partnership. If the couple is not legally married, a convincing file confirming their relationship over two years will be required (photographs, correspondence, confirmation from close relatives),
- English language test,
- confirm the address of residence in the UK,
- confirm the sponsor partner’s financial situation, that they have an annual income of at least £18,600 as an employee or a self-employed person.
Obtaining a partner visa is not a game of roulette. The first thing to understand is compliance with the written immigration rules point by point. The visa is issued for 2.5 years with the possibility of extension for the same period if the partners have not broken UK laws. Only then can the partner apply for British citizenship. One reason for visa refusal is the absence of evidence of the authenticity of the relationship.
While in the United Kingdom on a spouse/fiancée visa, a person has the right to invite a family member or relative to visit the UK. In this case a family visit visa – FAMILY VISIT is required.
Fiancée visa
To apply for a fiancée visa (Marriage Visitor) you must confirm that the future spouse is a British citizen, has permanent or temporary residence in accordance with the EEA Appendix of the Immigration Rules, and the partners must not be married.
The fiancée visa is issued strictly for submitting an application and getting married in the UK for a period of six months and does not allow residence in the territory beyond the specified period.
Applicants are required to provide:
- An address of residence in the UK.
- Complete the application form.
- Passport.
- Pass the TB TEST for tuberculosis.
- Take the IELTS TEST.
- Confirm the relationship. This can be done by providing joint photographs with dates and locations indicated, entry stamps of the British citizen into the fiancée’s country of citizenship or evidence of joint travel abroad if they met in a third country, confirmation of money transfers. Having evidence of a genuine relationship is the key to successful case consideration, passing the interview and obtaining the visa. The main purpose of the fiancée visa is to show real intentions to marry within six months.
- Confirm financial support for the period of stay in the UK.
Fiancé visa
The fiancé visa, like the fiancée visa, is issued for six months with the right to stay in the United Kingdom for that period. During this time the marriage must be officially registered and the partners can begin the procedure for applying for a spouse visa. Obtaining a British fiancé visa does not grant the right to work; once the partner switches from a fiancé visa to a spouse visa, they can begin work or study.
