Extension of Temporary Residence Permit

A residence permit is a document that allows a foreign citizen to temporarily reside in Ukraine. Grounds for extending residence in Ukraine

How to extend the residence permit yourself

Before applying to the State Migration Service on your own, it is important to consider whether there are grounds for extending the residence permit. Grounds, for example, include a marriage certificate, an employment reference, or a petition from a public or religious organization.

If the grounds for staying in the country change, you will be issued a residence permit on another basis corresponding to the actual situation.

Procedure and timeframes for extending a temporary residence permit

Officials of the migration service who decide on the extension of a residence permit primarily take into account the grounds for the foreign citizen’s further stay in Ukraine. Therefore, the relevant document (an employment or study certificate, a petition from a religious organization, etc.) must be prepared competently and in a timely manner.

The procedure also involves:

• providing other documents necessary to confirm factual data;
• submitting a properly drafted written application to the migration service;
• the personal presence of the foreign citizen when receiving the document confirming the extension of the residence permit.

The following are required to extend the residence permit:

Plan to extend the residence permit in advance

By law, a temporary residence permit is valid for 1 to 3 years. If a foreign citizen plans to remain in the country longer, it must be extended.

It is important to extend the residence permit no later than 15 days before the expiry of the previously issued permit. Staying in Ukraine with an expired document may lead to administrative penalties – a fine.

At the same time, there must be at least 15 days remaining before the expiration of the previously issued residence permit.

Reasons for refusal

An extension of a residence permit may be denied in the following cases:

• the person has been subject to administrative or criminal liability in Ukraine;
• the foreign citizen poses a threat to the national security of the state;
• the identity document does not conform to the established format;
• the application to the migration service contains false information.
