A long-term visa of type D is a special type of visa intended for entry to Ukraine for the purpose of obtaining a residence permit. It is issued for a maximum period of 90 days.

Grounds for obtaining it

The first thing to understand is that a type D visa can only be obtained by following the immigration route and having the appropriate grounds. The D visa is the final step for a foreign citizen on the way to obtaining a permanent or temporary residence permit. To obtain this type of visa, all grounds and documents for obtaining a temporary or permanent residence permit must be present. It can be said that obtaining a D visa is almost as complex as obtaining the residence permit itself.

Documents required for all D-type visas

  • Notarized translation of the foreign passport into Ukrainian,
  • Photo,
  • Visa application form,
  • Medical insurance for the entire validity period of the visa,
  • Advance appointment for submission at the embassy, consulate or visa center in your country, link to the scheduling resource http://visa.mfa.gov.ua,
  • Document confirming payment of the visa fee. The cost of the visa fee can be found on the embassy’s website,
  • Original foreign passport.

Depending on the purpose of obtaining the visa, additional documents may be required:

  1. Work permit.
  2. Immigration permit.
  3. Other documents corresponding to the purpose of your long-term stay.

Not in all countries or cities do Ukrainian embassies accept documents directly. In some cases, submission is done through VFS Global visa centers, where you also need to make an online appointment. Link.

Important! Pay attention to the passport: it must be valid for at least 3 months after the date of departure from Ukraine specified in the application form; have at least 2 blank pages and have a validity period of no more than 10 years.

If you did not indicate in the visa application that you will self-finance your stay in Ukraine, you should bring to the embassy:

  • bank statements showing account balances or ATM receipts from your cards,
  • copies of the front sides of the cards with your name.

By budget, the amount for maintenance should be around $4,900. This is the amount according to the law to cover a foreigner for the term of a D visa (90 days). This requirement is especially relevant for countries with a special visa issuance format. You can review the list of such countries in detail at the link.
